Jorge Lane Terrazas' Bird Photography at Hacienda Clemente Jacques & Villa San Clementito

According to Avibase, which has extensive data of the  world's birds, Mexico as of 2021 has 1129 species of birds, 496 of which are found in the state of Morelos, where Haciende Clemente Jacques and Villa San Clementito are located.

In late 2021, Jorge Lane Terrazas, an award-winning wildlife photographer, undertook a project to photograph birds on the 10 acre compound that houses both Hacienda Clemente Jacques and Villa San Clementito. On 51 consecutive days starting October 20, he rolled out of bed early in the morning and walked around the compound in search of birds.

When the project was completed, Jorge was pleasantly surprised that he had photographed over 70 species of birds.

He mirthfully titled his project Birds from A to Z for the American Kestrel he spotted on three days and the Zacatoneros de Cola Rojiza (Stripe Headed Sparrows) he often saw during his outings. He chuckles when telling that had he limited himself to bird names in English, the project title would have ended in Y, for the Yellow Rumped Warblers on the grounds.

Size-wise birds ranged from the ever-so-tiny Golden Crowned Emerald Hummingbird, even by hummingbird standards, to the large yet ever so graceful Great Blue Heron.

A good number of the birds are endemic to Mexico or found mainly in Mexico and Guatemala. He reports often counting as many as 15 species on given days.

All in all, the total exposure count was 8040, of which Jorge discarded 7714 shots, resulting in 326 keepers.

Wood bark, whether store bought or homemade from ingredients such as seeds, lard and peanut butter, is a common photographic practice to attract birds to a particular spot to facilitate taking pictures. While it would have made Jorge's picture taking every so much more easier, he chose not to do this because of the abundant natural food supply mother nature was providing at the time.
